Become a Social Justice Correspondent.
We’re looking for folks to join a seasonal cohort of volunteers who learn basic media skills and provide on the ground coverage of Portland’s social justice community. Check out the job description below, and email us your information if you’re interested.
SOCIAL JUSTICE CORRESPONDENT
B Media Collective is a community-based video art collective that uses political remix videos, documentaries, and skill building workshops to catalyze collaborative work for social justice. We strive to create cultural spaces that challenge dominant paradigms and open pro-active channels of communication for marginalized voices. Our work can be found at www.bmediacollective.org.
We are currently looking to fill a team of 4-7 Social Justice Correspondents to commit to a three month apprenticeship with B Media.
Qualifications:
Correspondents will need to have:
- An understanding of film making and the editing process
- Their own video camera (contact us if this is an issue)
- Ability to commit to the full three months
- Interest in deepening their understanding of media literacy and using their skills for social justice
- Willingness to learn, which includes sharing skills they have with others, and gracefully accepting critique.
- Desire to be part of a growing social justice film network in PDX.
Responsibilities:
Correspondents primary focus will be conducting interviews, documenting actions, and creating stories about social justice events in PDX. Our focus is always on local issues that are global in nature, and a continued focus of the apprenticeship will be on developing a narrative that fully expresses this.
Each participant will be responsible for sharing a skill they have, and learning a new skill to share with the group. This will include writing up an easy how to in order to follow the material, compiling links to the best how-to resources out there on the web, and conducting a skillshare of the material. This material will be featured on B Media’s public wiki as a resource for future DIY community film makers.
Correspondents will work solo, in a team, and in collaboration with members of B Media Collective, ensuring that all important community events/issues are covered fairly with a shared sense of responsibility. This includes balancing a focus on community talks, innovations, organizations, and stories that need to be told with an eye for both deeper expose and timeliness.
Opportunities:
Correspondents will have the opportunity to produce one video every two weeks, for a total of six videos. They will rotate between interviewing, filming, editing, and doing post-production on footage. This should provide correspondents with a solid portfolio as filmmakers upon completion, and experience with producing a wide variety of videos.
Correspondents work will be featured on the B Media Collective website, as well as any other website the creator would like to put it on. Our goal is to create a central hub of social justice films in PDX, and to provide a platform for emerging video artists to display their work.
Each video will go through a critique with a member of B Media, and this process should be considered beneficial. No video will be posted on the B Media website without having gone through a co-editing process with a member to ensure that the correspondent improves on their work, and that the work reaches the standards for films featured on the B Media website. This is standard practice for all the films we produce as a team.
Any material produced while part of the apprenticeship program can be used by B Media Collective in any way they like –it will always be able to used by the creator, however, in anyway they like as well. We are interested in mutually beneficial relationships.
