A black person is extra-judicially killed by police officers, security guards, or self-appointed vigilantes every 28 hours in the US according to “Operation Ghetto Storm”, a study by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, an anti-racist grassroots activist organization.
After the “not guilty” verdict for George Zimmerman, the man that shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17 year old African American youth, people around the country gathered to commemorate Trayvon’s life and voice their outrage at the violence and impunity of a system that has devastated so many lives.
In Portland, hundreds gathered on short notice, giving speeches, sharing information and reaffirming community as an organizational means to creating people power.
